Dental Anxiety And How Sedation Helps

Some patients tell us it has been three years. Some say twelve. A few have to think about it, which is usually its own answer.

Nobody who walks into our Thornton office gets a lecture about the gap. We are far more interested in what happens next than in what did not happen for the last decade. And for a lot of people, the thing that finally makes “next” possible is sedation.

Where Dental Fear Comes From, and How Sedation Helps

Dental anxiety is rarely irrational. It usually traces back to something specific.

A procedure years ago where the numbing did not fully work. A dentist who kept going after you said it hurt. A childhood appointment where nobody explained anything. Sometimes it is not about pain at all but about the loss of control of lying back with your mouth open while someone works above you, unable to speak.

For other people it is embarrassment. They know the situation has gotten worse and they expect judgment. That fear keeps people out of the chair longer than the fear of a needle ever does.

None of that is something you have to argue yourself out of. The point of sedation is that you do not have to.

The Three Sedation Options We Offer

We offer three types of sedation, and they are genuinely different experiences rather than three doses of the same thing. Which one fits depends on your anxiety level, the procedure, and your medical history.

  • Inhaled sedation, breathed through a small nose mask. It takes effect within minutes, leaves you awake and able to respond, and wears off almost as quickly. Most people can drive themselves home afterward.
  • Oral sedation, a medication taken before your appointment. You stay conscious but deeply relaxed, and many patients remember very little of the visit. You will need a ride.
  • IV sedation, delivered intravenously and adjustable throughout the appointment. This is the deepest option and the usual choice for longer surgical visits or severe anxiety. You will need a ride and a quiet rest of the day.

We will talk through which one makes sense for you before we schedule anything. That conversation is part of the care, not a formality.

What A Sedation Visit Is Like From Your Side

You arrive, we go over your health history and medications again, and we get you settled. Depending on the option, you either breathe through a mask, take a pill at the time we tell you, or have a small IV placed.

Then things get quiet. Time compresses. Patients frequently describe a long appointment as feeling like twenty minutes. You are monitored the entire time, and we are watching your vital signs, not just your comfort.

Afterward, we go over what was done and what comes next. If you had oral or IV sedation, your driver takes you home and the day is yours to sleep off.

Why Sedation Is Not Just For Anxiety

Sedation is useful for practical reasons too.

It helps patients with a strong gag reflex get through impressions and back-tooth work. It helps people who cannot sit comfortably for long stretches. And it lets us combine treatment, so instead of six separate appointments spread across four months, a lot of work can happen in one or two longer visits.

For someone who has been avoiding care for years and has a long list of things to address, that consolidation is often the difference between getting it done and giving up halfway through.

Sedation Also Makes Bigger Treatment Possible

Dr. Andrei Ionescu focuses on cosmetic and implant dentistry, including full-arch and single-tooth implants, and he has pursued extensive post-graduate education in advanced oral surgery and sedation. He also teaches sedation and implant surgery to other dentists as a mentor at the Colorado Surgical Institute.

That matters here because the patients who most need complex care are often the ones most afraid of it. Sedation is what lets an anxious patient get an implant placed or a full-arch case completed, rather than living with a problem indefinitely because the idea of the appointment is unbearable.

Things You Can Do That Help, Sedation Or Not

Even without medication, small adjustments make a real difference:

  • Tell us you are anxious when you book, so we can plan a longer, slower appointment
  • Agree on a hand signal that means stop, and know we will actually stop
  • Ask us to explain each step before it happens, or ask us not to, if details make it worse
  • Bring headphones and your own music or a podcast
  • Schedule for the time of day when you feel most steady
  • Bring someone with you to the consultation if that helps

Our practice was built by people who remember their own dental visits as boring and unapproachable. Making the experience feel different is not marketing for us. It is the reason the office looks and sounds the way it does.

If you are nervous, you do not have to book treatment. You can book a consultation, sit upright, keep your shoes on, and just talk. We will look at what is going on, tell you honestly what we see, and lay out the options including which sedation approach would suit you.

We take care of patients throughout Thornton and nearby communities like Henderson, Welby and Todd Creek, and a good number of them started exactly this way, with a conversation they had been putting off for years.

Either way, we will take it at your pace. Call our Thornton office or schedule online.
